VENTURA, Calif. – The County Executive Office announced today that it had been notified by the California Nurses Association that the recent tentative contract agreement reached between the parties has been ratified by CNA members. The new contract will provide the County’s nurses with competitive wage and benefits packages, and help attract and retain the most qualified nurses available.
“Both parties wanted the same thing,” said Shawn Atin, Assistant County Executive Officer for Human Resources. “We wanted a compensation package that recognized the quality of our nurses and paid them accordingly, while at the same time making sure we could attract and retain nurses in the future. Because we agreed on what was needed, it was only a matter of time before we came to an understanding.”
The two sides met on more than 20 occasions in recent months to negotiate the agreement which includes hourly wage increases, a new wage grid for most County nurses, a new classification for operating room nurses and pay increases for per diem or temporary nurses. The terms bring County nurses well within the range of the surrounding market for total compensation. The agreement must still be approved by the Board of Supervisors, but the long negotiations ultimately resulted in terms that were acceptable to both sides.
“Nurses are the backbone of our health care system,” said County Executive Officer Mike Powers. “We value the work they do every day to treat patients. This new contract recognizes and rewards their professionalism, compassion and dedication.”
The agreement is expected to go to the Board of Supervisors for approval on Tuesday, March 22.
