VENTURA, Calif. – Each year, the Red Cross accepts nominations from the public for the recognition of people who go above and beyond in service to others, exemplifying the spirit of the Red Cross mission. These heroes are honored in recognition of their good works. This year, the Trauma Team from the Ventura County Medical Center was recognized with the Health & Safety Heroes Award.
The Red Cross touches lives in Ventura County every day through programs and services such as Disaster Relief; Service to the Armed Forces; and Preparedness and Health & Safety Training. As an organization committed to helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies in our communities, the Red Cross salutes individuals who make a difference.
The Ventura County Medical Center Trauma Team was nominated for the Heroes Award by County Executive Officer Mike Powers for their work in injury prevention, fall prevention, children's car seat installation, motorcycle helmet program, violence intervention and, of course, their dedicated work in the Trauma Center.
Specifically, Powers wanted to recognize Trauma Co-Directors, Doctors Javier Romero and Thomas Duncan, and their entire team of physicians and nurses for their work following last year's Metrolink train crash.
"Last year, during the Metrolink train crash, the Trauma Team's passion for their work, and the reputation they have cultivated among their peers, was made abundantly clear," said Powers. "In what could only be described as an all-hands-on-deck effort, every surgeon at VCMC stayed on duty for the entire day, and employees who were not on duty showed up with food for their peers, knowing they would likely not receive a meal break."
The Health & Safety Heroes Award honors heroes that have demonstrated extraordinary courage in the field of health and safety.
"Heroes routinely show distinguished courage and ability," said Powers. "They are regarded as a model for how we should all live our lives. I believe the Ventura County Medical Center Trauma Team is an excellent choice for this award."
